A Writer's Journey

Looking Up

JackieSue25@60| Reclaiming My Waistline+ The Journey North

Life looks so much brighter when I’m feeling a bit more positive.

Between toothache, dental appointments, a sick cat, and nothing happening on the house selling front, I’ve been in the dumps lately. The kind where even tiny setbacks feel like a disaster, I’m struggling through my current story while feeling I’m too dense to write a shopping list, and needing a glass or two of red wine at night to unwind.

This week, things are shifting.

The Tiger has miraculously recovered – and I mean that literally, since I managed to get maybe a third of a course of antibiotics into him before he got so scared he was running and hiding when he saw me coming. And after four days of refusing food and looking ill and fragile, he’s now picked up again. No idea why, but I’m leaving him to enjoy the sun and just keep an eye out for changes. Even if he wakes us at four in the morning demanding breakfast.

I still have more dentistry in my future, especially after a second broken tooth, but… nothing’s hurting and I’m not scoffing pain pills around the clock. That’s a big win.

Sky-high stress isn’t helping anything, so I’ve gone back listening to the Chillpod at least once a day. It doesn’t leave me zoned out and physically relaxed like a hypnosis tape. The effect his more subtle. My focus is better after listening, and the writing picks up, becomes more fluid. There’s bound to be other effects I haven’t picked up on yet, but for the writing alone, it’s worth to keep going.

I’ve started exercising again. Just a couple of simple, short routines I can do in between desk jobs to keep moving. I’ve also, completely out of the blue, tried a beginners Qi Gong video on YouTube. Deceptively easy, deceptively simple, but… I’m aching in a very good way this morning. Is that the FitPod at work?

Yesterday was my 10th anniversary of being a published author – and my cluttered mind is still processing that. I’ve started to serialise another novel on my Patreon page and, by predictable magic, the main story I’ve been struggling with has picked up. It’s counter-intuitive, perhaps, to add more work to get the stalled work flowing, but it’s worked before, and it seems to do so now – so I’m not arguing.

And – most importantly perhaps – we’ve decided to change estate agents to get the house sale moving again. It means another round of staging for photographs, of obsessive cleaning and tidying, and then forever wondering where I’d put something… but that’s short-term pain for long-term gain. And best of all, it feels as if we’re in control again.

So is it the doing that makes me feel brighter, or is feeling brighter inspiring me to do? I’m not sure, but I’ll happily take the result.
