Barefoot in Northumberland

In April 2024, I was close to giving up. Between backache, blisters, and a bunion I was struggling to walk more than three miles without being in pain. The menopause had “helped” me put on a stone and a half in weight, but still… I wasn’t even sixty yet and could no longer walk?

Not fun. I think best while I’m moving. During the 2020 lockdowns, I wrote a whole novel during my daily permitted exercise hour. I find it easy to draft scenes while outside, away from the distractions of modern life. Walking gives a rhythm to the flow of words and when I can’t think of a word or phrase I just keep walking until I do.

When I took a bag filled with plasters and painkillers on a day out, and foot and back pain distracted me from writing, something had to change.

I decided to rehab my bunion and to expand my walking range until I could manage 15 miles, repeatedly and without pain. Because there was really no point in moving to Northumberland if I couldn’t enjoy the walking!

How is this going? Read on.
